Pittsburgh Restaurant Scene
First let us apologize for the long hiatus. We have been busier than expected in the “real world” and have been unable to give the blog the amount of attention it deserves. From here on out we will try and keep the updates coming at a more consistent pace.
So far most of our blogs have involved more upscale dining, that changes now. D’s Sixpax & Dogz has been one of our favorite spots to visit for the last 5 years and you will see why if you ever go there. D’s is located on South Braddock Ave in the heart of Regent Square and it is so much more than just hot dogs and beer. Calling this place lively is a major understatement; even at lunchtime the place fills up fast! The menu here has every one covered; awesome hot dogs (duh!) great pizza, big burgers, filling salads, and a variety of wings. Another big draw of this place is the “Beer Cave”; if you love obscure, hard to find craft brews from around the world this is the place you want to be! Even if you aren’t hungry stop in and check out the “Beer Cave” and grab a six-pack or two to go.
The best part about D’s is that even though it’s a bar and hot dog joint, everything they make is delicious and they care about the food as much as the beer. No matter what you order, you will be satisfied.
We have tried numerous things on the menu, but we tend to stick to our favorite items. D ordered the Big Ben Hot Dog, which is an all beef dog topped with cheese sauce, cole slaw, and 7 French fires (7, get it?). I order the Mason Dixon Hot Dog, again an all beef dog, this topped with chili and cole slaw. They have 6 or 7 “specialty” dogs all of which are great or you can order a standard dog and pick your own toppings. They also offer a “veggie” dog, turkey dog and brats, if the Vienna style all beef dog isn’t your thing. Don’t be scared to try any thing on the menu though, we have tried the burgers and pizzas and they are fantastic as well.
Even though it’s technically a bar it’s very family friendly so don’t worry about bringing out the kids. It’s also a good spot to watch any type of sporting event, they have plenty of flat screen TVs in the bar and restaurant. There is always a wait for the restaurant side if you are lucky enough to spot an opening in the bar side grab those seats because it’s first come, first serve.
Regent Square is becoming a great spot to eat in the city; along with D’s there is Square Café, Root174, Cibo, and Thai Cottage, plus some local bars. The parking situation isn’t ideal but if you can find a spot and walk up and down the street you will find a great spot to eat and drink.
